I Hate My Job VS I Love My Job
So you might have said that dreaded thing that can happen to the best of us … I hate my job (ugh). There were times I did to. Most of my career it was the opposite, I love my job I’d say. I’d have to make myself ignore the computer, the team questions, executive demands. Work beyond my wildest little kid imagination.
But it wasn’t always that way. There were times so stressful, I could barely think straight, couldn’t imagine what I could do about it, or that anything good could be done. It was miserable. I was miserable. That’s when those awful I muttered those “I hate my job” words far too often for my own good. Truth be told, I didn’t know what to do.
You may know the feeling and count it wonderful for the times work’s been good. You may say those words much more than you wish.
The good news is, you’re not alone and … it’s fixable. And since you are the perfect person to do it, let’s get to it!
How to Get Less of that I Hate My Job Feeling (& More Love My Job)
Great careers are full of people and work that align with your values, your skills, provide enough challenge — and enough down time. Overall, it’s something that’s fun a good bit of the time.
Begin with the Beginning (YOU!)
Grab a pad and pen — or dictate into your phone — just a sentence or two about the times you LOVED what you were doing so much, you’d be happy to do it even more. Times when your work fed your soul. Or when the people did. Or the thing you were doing or creating together was compelling. What’s the “Who, What, When, Where & Why” of those super-juicy times?
Time #1 …
Time #2 …
Time #3 …
Congrats! Bringing to mind what you love to do, who you love to do it with, and the difference you make in the world — that’s MAGIC. It’s the kind of magic that fuels a great career.
Why? It gives you Clarity. And from that you can build Momentum that makes an Impact.
What about each of those times was so special?
Grab your trusty pad and pen again, and for each, ask yourself “what about it made it so special?” Write everything that comes to mind, one at a time.
Time #1 …
Time #2 …
Time #3 …
(You’re getting closer to gold.) Closer to what you love to do. Closer to the kind of folks you love to do it with. Closer to difference you make in the world that energizes you. It’s a bit magical. You’re getting closer to jet fuel for your career.
Read through your notes, two or three times. Ask yourself, “What’s the thread? What’s the theme that holds them?”
Theme, draft #1 …
Theme, draft #2 …
Theme, draft #3 …
The THEME is your guide to what fuels you, particularly in your career, your profession. What makes it enjoyable, worthy and even fun.
And THAT becomes your foundation, your launchpad, to the better future that clarity brings.
You’ve started on the path to saying … I Love My Job!
